Word to the Wise
Thursday, August 23, 2018 - Thursday in the 20th Week in Ordinary Time
[Ezek 36:23-28 and Matt 22:1-14]THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 2018 ST. ROSE OF LIMA, O.P. [Ezekiel 36:23-28 and Matthew 22:1-14. Scriptures may vary at Dominican locales.] “I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts.” [Ezekiel] Ezekiel offers to the exiles a new vision and a new start - a new covenant. They certainly needed one and we know from all the chapters that came before this just how bad things had gotten. But now there is hope even if it has been a severe hope. Here at the monastery of cloistered Dominican nuns in British Columbia in a beautiful setting, Ezekiel might seem a little out of place, as it were. But exile can be personal and one may find a desert in one’s own heart. God is always waiting to offer us something new if we are ready to listen. Sometimes the message comes colorfully and severely as the chapters of Ezekiel have shown. Since I have been giving some conferences to the sisters on Flannery O’Connor’s literature, the terrifying vision of Ezekiel comes alive! We sometimes refer to such vision by the term from the prophet Daniel, “the handwriting on the wall.” The message of hope can come in interesting ways. Be ready for it! AMEN
