Word to the Wise
Saturday, September 8, 2018 - Sept. 8 - The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
[Micah 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30 and Matt 1:1-16, 18-23 or 1:18-23,707]SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2018. THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY [Micah 5:1-4a OR Romans 8:28-30 and Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23] We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. [Romans] There are times when those who are called according to God’s purpose are not sure that things are all that “good.” Mary was called to serve God in a unique way, but we know that she suffered considerably. Moses was called and we know that there was a time when he told God to kill him to deliver him from the complaints of the Israelites! Tradition tells us that all but one of the apostles (except Judas) died a martyr’s death (John was the exception). However, Mary and the apostles did accomplish great “goods” on behalf of God. Pastors and those who dedicate themselves to the service of of others out of love of God do know discouraging and difficult times but confidence in God’s ultimate vindication of their work is what keeps them going. I think of my Dominican brethren who serve in Iraq and Syria, for example, in the war zones. We celebrate Mary’s birthday today but she represents all who have responded to God’s call to serve. To her and to all of them we can say, “Happy Birthday!” AMEN
