Word to the Wise
Monday, September 10, 2018 - Monday in the 23th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Cor 5:1-8 and Luke 6:6-11]MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2018. MONDAY IN THE TWENTY-THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [1 Corinthians 5:1-8 and Luke 6:6-11] Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough? Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened. [1 Corinthians] The words of St. Paul today may strike a strong chord. He refers to immoral conduct in the Corinthian community and uses the image of yeast that has lost its ability to work with the dough. His solution is to “clear out the old yeast so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened.” There are voices in our church that are calling exactly for that at the present time. One of my hobbies is bread baking and I am aware of the power of the yeast to accomplish the rising of the bread. I’m not sure what may be necessary to get new yeast and create new dough but I pray we will find a way. The People of God need to be fed. Good leadership is like the yeast in the bread, whether it be Pope or pewperson. Finding the right ingredients and then rolling up our sleeves to mix it well is the challenge ahead of us. I think St. Paul would agree. AMEN
