Word to the Wise
Saturday, October 20, 2018 - Saturday in the 28th Week in Ordinary Time
[Eph 1:15-23 and Luke 12:8-12]SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2018 SATURDAY IN THE TWENTY-EIGHTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [St. Paul of the Cross C.P. - founder of the Passionists] [Ephesians 1:15-23 and Luke 12:8-12] Therefore, I, too, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and of your love for all the holy ones, do not cease giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. [Ephesians] The first three chapters of the Letter to the Ephesians are worth repeated reading because they are a beautiful reflection on the transcendent meaning of Christ. The last verses of chapter three [3:14-21] are a prayer we could say for anyone. Today’s passage from chapter one is a prayer for wisdom and revelation and it is one that I find particularly relevant in the university culture in which I currently live. So many options face students now than did when I was an undergraduate student back in the 1960’s, or even when I was a newly ordained priest/law student in the early 1970’s. The advent of the internet and cell phones gives a pace to life that seems to demand quick decision-making without careful consideration of consequences. Wisdom and revelation take more time and depth. I pray every day for the students I have met at Texas Tech that they have that spirit of wisdom and revelation that will guide the important decisions they make not just about careers, but also everyday choices that can slowly but surely impact those long range decisions. Those of us who are “older” need to do this, too. The term “older and wiser” cannot be taken for granted. The vulnerability of the aged is well established. We all need to pray for wisdom and understanding, especially in our current turbulent political and ecclesiastical environment. AMEN
