Word to the Wise
Tuesday, December 4, 2018 - 1st Week of Advent - Tues
[Isa 11:1-10 and Luke 10:21-24]TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2018 TUESDAY IN THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT [Isaiah 11:1-10 and Luke 10:21-24] A shoot shall spring from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a Spirit of counsel and of strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord..... [Isaiah] “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.” [Luke] Prophecy and fulfillment are again before us today. Isaiah’s magnificent vision, which includes the lines about the wolf and the lion and the baby and the cobra, is one of great unity and peace over which a great king will preside. Jesus tells those who hear him that they are blessed to see and hear what he has to say., because prophets of old could only see and hear this in a vision. When we read Isaiah’s vision, we can probably long for that same peace and reconciliation in our world. We are confident that Christ can give this to us but our world is often deaf and blind to his message. He is the fulfillment of Isaiah’s dream but we have had great troubles realizing that dream in practice. Perhaps one of our greatest prayers this Advent could be for the peace and reconciliation of that vision. AMEN
