Word to the Wise
Monday, December 31, 2018 - Dec. 31 - 7th Day in the Octave of Christmas
[1 John 2:18-21 and John 1:1-18]MONDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2018 DAY SEVEN IN THE OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS [1 John 2:18-21 and John 1:1-18] From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. [John] The majestic Prologue to the Gospel According to John appears again. We read it on Christmas Day at the Mass During the Day. Then, the emphasis in my thoughts was on the child who was born - the Word made flesh, that dwelled among us. Today, on the seventh day of the Octave of Christmas we turn to what we receive as a result of God’s incarnate action. We receive the fullness of grace and truth. As we make our way day by day in the scriptural story of Jesus throughout the liturgical year, it is that fullness of grace and truth that can serve as a powerful motivator. Jesus did not come as a figure in our manger scene, important as that scene is to our celebration. The fullness of grace and truth was a living human being who shared and still shares our condition. When we become a close friend to someone, they become a part of our life and bring a joy that gives us a reason to keep on living. We take that joy and comfort into our daily life, knowing that we are loved just as we are, but also knowing that, like all humans we sometimes fail in that relationship. Jesus, however, does not fail us. He is that fullness of grace and truth that is always ready to forgive and accept. We have a few more days yet to go in the Christmas/Epiphany season, but we are already experiencing in a special way that fullness of grace and truth. AMEN
