Word to the Wise
Friday, December 16, 2022 - 3rd Week of Advent - Fri
[Isa 56:1-3a, 6-8 and John 5:33-36,277]FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2022 FRIDAY IN THE 3RD WEEK INADVENT [EARLY FOR TRAVEL] [Isaiah 56:1-3a, 6-8 and John 5:33-36] The foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, ministering to him, loving the name of the Lord and becoming his servants - all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them will I bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer……For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. [Isaiah] I think of these words from Isaiah when the feast of the Epiphany arrives but also in looking at the figures of the three Magi who were not Jews. There is also the Canaanite woman whose daughter Jesus healed. And then there was the council of Jerusalem, which freed non-Jews from strict observance of the Mosaic Law. In short, the vision of the early Christian community began to reach beyond the temple in Jerusalem, which was destroyed by the Romans less than forty years after Jesus died and rose. In celebrating Advent and the birth of Jesus, we may be challenged to broaden our Catholic vision and understand that all of humanity has a place in God’s providence even if we have maintained an historical rootedness in our Catholic tradition. God’s providence is bigger than we think. How the birth of Jesus and his life, death and resurrection will impact the lives of non-Catholics and all non-Christians is spoken to in the documents of the Second Vatican Council. But there remains some mystery, as with all God’s providence and actions. The profession of faith that came from the Canaanite woman, the centurion with a sick servant and the soldier who spoke at the foot of the cross and the repentant thief can give us food for thought. God’s house is a house of prayer for all peoples. AMEN
