Something to Think About
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT -
The Extraordinary Synod on the Family that took place earlier this month in Rome as given us much to think about, although to believe the media, it was only about communion for the divorced-remarried and same-sex unions. In fact it was about a vast range of challenges to the existence of family life. The synod process itself generated some interest because Pope Francis made it clear he wanted everyone to speak their minds and not just say what they thought HE wanted to hear! An interim report on the discussions among the participants also generated excitement because some of the bishops felt it was one-sided and did not fairly represent the discussions. This "extraordinary" synod, furthermore, was designed to serve as the first step to a "general" synod that will take place next year. Pope Francis' closing talk is a masterful piece of diplomacy in which he warns about various "temptations" that could threaten the synod process! All in all, this synod was a vast contrast to previous ones which featured restricted debate and were mostly "conflict free."
There are a number of things to note from all of this. First, there was a considerable diversity of views about how core beliefs should be lived! The Church did not show itself to be monolithic at all! At the same time, values about marriage as a sacrament were repeatedly affirmed despite the diversity! Second, one should be extremely cautious about media reporting on an event like this, which emphasizes conflict and tries to advance particular agendas - no matter which group is reporting! Third, one's faith in the role of the Holy Spirit speaking in ALL the participants should be strengthened. From prelate to pewperson, the Spirit was present and will be present at the General Synod next year. IT'S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!
It Has Been Said
"And this is the Church, the vineyard of the Lord, the fertile Mother and the caring Teacher, who is not afraid to roll up her sleeves to pour wine and oil on people's wounds; who doesn't see humanity as a house of glass to judge or categorize people. This is the Church, One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic and composed of sinners needful of God's mercy. This is the Church, the true bride of Christ, who seeks to be faithful to her spouse and to her doctrine. It is the Church that is not afraid to eat and drink with prostitutes and publicans..."
from Pope Francis' concluding address at the Extraordinary Synod on the Family
