RBWORDS - VOLUME 28 - NUMBER 11 - NOVEMBER 2015

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT -
The end of November brings the end of the liturgical year and the beginning of a new one with the Season of Advent. Many things are clamoring for our intention besides the usual personal and familial challenges. Those personal challenges can be considerable: loss of health, loss of employment, death or illness in the family or among acquaintances, a son or daughter in combat, etc.. Other items include the noisy political debates occurring in a presidential campaign that has begun much too soon, the BUY, BUY, BUY noise of the "holiday season," the world immigration crisis brought on by war and violence in the Middle East, etc.. How can a person focus on the story that begins each year with the First Sunday of Advent? It does require "intentionality."
One may obtain a form of the Advent wreath and light the candles and say the prayers each day. One may retrieve the nativity scene from its hibernating place, set it up and consider all that preceded the scene. One may meditate on the daily scriptures for the season. These are just suggestions. The important thing is not to let all those other concerns overwhelm and take away the story of hope in the birth of Jesus Christ as the Word made flesh. Happy Advent! IT'S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

It Has Been Said
"What I believe is to magnificent, so glorious, that it is beyond finite comprehension. To believe that the universe was created by a purposeful, benign Creator is one thing. To believe that this Creator took on human vesture, accepted death and mortality, was tempted, betrayed, broken, and all for love of us, defies reason. It is so wild that it terrifies some Christians who try to dogmatize their fear by lashing out at other Christians, because a tidy Christianity with all answers given is easier than one which reaches out to the wild wonder of God's love, a love we don't even have to earn."
from PENGUINS AND GOLDEN CALVES by Madeleine L'Engle
