SOMETHING THINK ABOUT -
Holy Week and Easter are almost upon us as I write this. As with Christmas, there is a cultural side to the celebration with Easter bunnies (live and chocolate) and dyed eggs. We all have our memories of those. But the cultural side is not necessarily the religious side. One memory I have is of a little boy solemnly handing me a box with a cross in it made of chocolate. I could not bring myself to eat it!! The one we kiss on Good Friday is not made of chocolate!!!
Holy Week begins this Sunday, April 2, with Palm Sunday and Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover and to meet his destiny to suffer, die and rise. The significance of the events of this coming week is profound. The gospel scriptures for the past few days have been coming from the Gospel According to John and have shown the dramatic tension of Jesus’ adversaries plotting to get rid of him. In the “synoptic” gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke, the incident of the cleaning of the temple seems to be a “last straw.” In the Gospel According to John, the raising of Lazarus is the catalyst that turns the plotting lethal. All four share the figure of Judas and his betrayal. Those who attend the devotion of the Stations of the Cross can join in the re-enactment of part of the story, but to have the whole event one really has to attend Mass all week or at least Thursday, Friday and Saturday/Easter Sunday. These are days of saving grace. If attendance in person is not possible, perhaps viewing the services online or on TV may be possible.
To each and every one of my Beloved Readers, I wish a blessed and profound Holy Week and Easter celebration. IT’S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
It Has Been Said
IT HAS BEEN SAID:
Jesus’ resurrection proclaims the miraculous transformation of our earthly existence. We remain as we are, men and women with earthly bodies; Jesus too for all eternity will be the son of Mary who was nurtured by the love and nourishment of his home in Nazareth…It really happened.
