Word to the Wise
Tuesday, May 8, 2007 - Tuesday in the Fifth Week of Easter
[Acts 14:19-28 and John 14:27-31A]Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you.
At every celebration of the Eucharist we hear the words of Jesus about giving peace. Then we are supposed to turn to our neighbor and wish them that same peace. Do we know what we are doing? What kind of peace are we wishing? Is it another friendly ritual which has no more meaning than, "How do you do?" Or, I get to touch that cute person behind me! Or, "Oh no! I can stand him/her!" The "peace" that Jesus gives is himself. It is salvation. He is not using peace in the sense of absence of conflict. The peace Jesus gives may indeed keep us confident in times of conflict and trial. He is saying we should not be afraid. His presence is the realization of salvation in the present time. Surely that is something powerful to wish to someone else. If we can be intentional and not just automatic about it, we may experience that peace from the one who offers it. If so, then the kingdom of God is present in our midst. AMEN
