Word to the Wise
Saturday, June 16, 2007 - Immaculate Heart of Mary
[2 Corinthians 5:14-21 and Luke 2:41-51]Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.
If Jesus' has a heart, surely his mother does. The feast celebrated today arose in relation to the one celebrated yesterday. The gospel scripture shows an anxious heart, however. Jesus is lost in the hubbub of the feast. Everyone thought he was with someone else. Even modern parents know this experience. The anxious search for a missing child is a difficult experience. Perhaps the feast might be better named the "anxious heart of Mary." Jesus gave her many anxious moments and the particularly agonizing one of his death on the cross. I find it consoling that perhaps she might be anxious about me from time to time and come hunting for me. That kind of heart is one that we all need. AMEN
