Word to the Wise
Monday, May 9, 2011 - 3rd Week of Easter - Mon
[Acts 6:8-15 and John 6:22-29,899]This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent!
Ultimately, the Christian life comes down to this one statement by Jesus. It is a matter of faith. Faith then shapes everything else - hope, love..everything! The "work" of God is to believe in the one whom God has sent. Once that is established, the Gospel of John tell us, we are already experiencing eternal life! This is a personal and communal matter. Our faith is not in the "signs" even if the bread and fish are good eating, and the wine is the best at the wedding. Our faith is in Jesus!
We can begin to see the connection later in the Gospel of John when Jesus confronts Peter with the question, "Do you love me?" Each time Peter protests his love, Jesus tells him to "feed my lambs...." So, our life with Christ does not stop with the words, "I believe." It goes on with "I love!" and "I serve!" If the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, it remains our task to put skin on our faith in the form of sharing faith, love and giving hope to others. We won't be doing this alone. We will have the Holy Spirit and our brothers and sisters in faith who with us form the Body of Christ. He is the one whom God has sent. AMEN
