Word to the Wise
Saturday, July 9, 2011 - Saturday in the 14th Week in Ordinary Time
[Gen 49:29-32; 50:15-26a and Matt 10:24-33,1012]Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
After all the demands of the Sermon on the Mount and the training for ministry and the warnings about persecution, the Lord tells us not to worry! A few days ago, on a walk, I saw one of those sparrows the Lord speaks about. It was used to humans, I guess, because it was close to me and went about its business without flying away! It was showing me an example of not being afraid! And even if the hairs on my head are considerably less numerous than when I was much younger, the Lord tells me that he knows where everyone of them is located on my head.
Worries about food, clothing, shelter, medical care, etc. consume much of our energy if we are honest about it. The Lord tells us to put him first and the rest will follow. That takes a big leap of faith, but Christianity is all about faith. AMEN
