Word to the Wise
Wednesday, September 28, 2011 - Wednesday in the 26th Week in Ordinary Time
[Neh 2:1-8 and Luke 9:57-62,1081]And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father." But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God."
In yesterday's gospel scripture, we were told that Jesus had resolutely set himself to journey to Jerusalem, fully aware of what awaited him there. Today we see that resolution in his replies to would-be disciples. There are three examples given. The first shows that the would-be disciple had not considered the full implications of the physical demands that would be made. There's no "home" to go back to - no property to claim as one's own. The second is probably one of the most debated because it seems harsh. "Let the dead bury their dead." Jesus seems to be saying two things here. The first is that filial duties, important as they may be, do not trump the demand of discipleship, which is to follow Jesus. The second implies that those who do not order their priorities according to this demand are "spiritually dead." The third is similar to the second. Thus, physical security, familial duty and emotional affection are all subordinated to following Jesus. That's a tough demand, even if Jesus has promised that it will have its rewards!
Dominicans around the world today will be celebrating the feast of a number of missionaries and companions who were martyred in Japan in the 17th century. Although the gospel scripture in the lectionary for today is the ordinary one for the twenty-sixth Wednesday in "Ordinary Time," it nonetheless highlights the seriousness of the commitment that may be demanded by faith in Jesus. Three of the larger number are mentioned, a bishop, a priest and a layperson: Dominic Ibanez, James Tomonaga, and Lawrence Ruiz - a Spaniard, a Japanese and a Filipino!. Status and nationality do not matter. It is the commitment and living it out that counts. For us Dominicans, especially, on this day the sacrifice of our brothers and sisters in Japan is a reminder of that stark reality of love. AMEN
