Word to the Wise
Wednesday, December 7, 2011 - 2nd Week of Advent - Wed
[Isa 40:25-31 and Matt 11:28-30,269]Though young men faint and grow weary, and youths stagger and fall, they that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles' wings; they will run and not grow weary, walk, and not grow faint. [Isaiah] Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. [Matthew]
At my age, I am well aware that my energy level is not what it used to be. A more graphic reminder occurs when I visit the home of friends who have small children! My years in campus ministry required a fairly good reserve of energy because the regular company of college students demanded some long hours! In a way, their presence was energizing, but I know that even that source has less and less effect now. The seasons of Advent and Christmas can be very demanding on energy resources, as well. Some folks become emotionally drained by the experience.
The words of Isaiah offer some refreshment and consolation, as do the words from the gospel today. It is worth taking a few moments each day to think about "the reason for the season." That manger scene can serve as a focus that both restores emotional energy and gives rest to the frazzled nerves. A sense of perspective can reorganize and bring cheer to what can become an ordeal. If we anticipate the coming birth of the Prince of Peace, we might find it helpful to imagine what that peace can be. That can both "renew our strength: and give us rest! AMEN
