Word to the Wise
Thursday, January 26, 2012 - Jan. 26 - Sts. Timothy and Titus, bishops
[2 Tim 1:1-8 or Titus 1:1-5 and Mark 4:21-25]I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the Gospel with the strength that comes from God.
There is an old Louisiana saying that goes something like this: "When you're up to your rear in alligators, it's hard to remember the initial objective was to drain the swamp." The "pep talk" that St. Paul gives to his companion, St. Timothy, is one that all disciples should read. We know that Paul endured his "share" and more of hardship for the Gospel.[cf. 2 Cor 11:24-29] He is not urging Timothy to do anything that he (Paul) has not already had to undergo! Encouragement is the important point here.
When faced with all kinds of obstacles, including hostility from family and friends, in regard to bearing witness to the gospel, the "spirit of power and love and self-control" can be severely tested. This can be true at all age-levels and all circumstances. My own pastoral experience of many years in campus ministry made me well-acquainted with the struggles university students experienced in confronting the temptations offered for sex, substance abuse, cheating and lying, etc. that batter against the integrity of faith. My current itinerant preaching ministry of parish missions and retreats for clergy and laity brings me face to face with similar challenges beyond the student years. One can feel powerless when constantly pushed and worn down. The challenges may change according to age and circumstance but the goal is the same, discipleship leading to witness now and ultimately eternal life in Christ. Families, friends, jobs, school, church parish - no matter where we turn there will be challenges to our faith and conduct We all have the spirit of power, love and self-control. We all have faith. What we may lack and should give and receive is encouragement. At least today, we find it in the letter to Timothy. We can put our own address on it, or else send it to someone who needs encouragement! AMEN
