Word to the Wise

[Eph 3:2-12 and Luke 12:39-48]Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more. [Luke]
Persons who are chosen for leadership positions know well (or learn the hard way) that they are held to a "higher" standard by their constituents! Texts, twitters and tweets can put a person's conduct and words on display around the world in a matter of seconds! An old image for public service (and church service) says it's "like living in a goldfish bowl." In some ways this makes hypocrites of the rank and file who would hold a leader to a standard that the rank and file do not embrace in their own lives! However, Jesus puts it bluntly in the words highlighted above: Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more. As another old saying puts it: (the higher standard) "comes with the territory!"
We could easily miss this distinction in today's gospel scripture because it is a continuation of yesterday's passage from Luke about being vigilant and faithful "servants" of the Lord. If we go back to the beginning (Luke 12:35), we see that the Lord will indeed spread a banquet for the faithful and vigilant servants found ready at his arrival. However, there is a "shift" with Peter's question: Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone? [Note the change in words from "servant" to "steward," a more responsible position.] The response is that leaders particularly will be held accountable because more is entrusted to them! It is this "trust" that is so important and explains why those in leadership are held to a "higher standard." From Pope to Usher, the truth of service must run. I serve my Dominican community here in Houston as its "Prior." The constitutions of our order give me a great deal of power and discretion. If I fail in my duty, the whole community suffers. At the same time, one of those duties is to challenge the brothers to be "faithful and vigilant." The gospel requires this of all of us, but particularly of those who serve and lead. AMEN
