These words begin one of the most majestic passages in the New Testament! The Gospel of John does not have an "infancy narrative." It shows that the early Christian community had begun to think of Jesus in more than local terms. He is now seen to be eternal - before the "beginning" in Genesis! He is the Word made flesh who dwells among us. He is grace and truth!
He is the light that shines in the darkness. We who accept him are enabled to become children of God! It's hard to say anything more sublime than this poem about Christ that begins the Gospel of John. As we put away the nativity scene, we can read this passage and realize that Christ was born in time for us, but he has always existed for us. His love is eternal. AMEN
