Word to the Wise
Wednesday, February 27, 2013 - 2nd Week of Lent - Wed
[Jer 18:18-20 and Matt 20:17-28]You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.....
Jesus' words are in response to what could only be called "political maneuvering" by Mama Zebedee and her two sons, James and John. Notice that these two were two of the closest to Jesus. He took them with him up the mountain for the "transfiguration" and on other occasions. Yet, even they show that they do not understand what Jesus' real mission is. Of course they were familiar with the ways of rulers! They had Herod and Pontius Pilate as examples. Those "great ones" did make their "authority" felt! Jesus would establish a very different kind of kingdom - one that would require a change of heart and a reversal of the usual ways of authority. He would demonstrate this clearly at the Last Supper when he would wash the feet of the disciples. At the present moment he can only tell James and John that they would indeed share in his fate and his kingdom. The indignation of the other ten is such that Jesus knows the two ambitious brothers are not alone! That is why he calls them together for a bit of instruction!
The lessons taught in this gospel story are still being learned - perhaps not well - by leadership everywhere. We witness it daily in the political posturing of our national leaders. Everyone seems to be trying to make their authority "felt." Sadly we see it in church leadership as well. The current historic transition initiated by Pope Benedict's decision to retire will mean political maneuvering on a scale that can only amuse and amaze and discourage all at the same time! The Holy Spirit will have to work overtime! As of 8pm Rome time, on February 28, 2013, all the various heads of Vatican departments (with one or two exceptions) lose their jobs! It's not just a new pope that is being chosen! I'm sure the new pope will be an extraordinary person, but I feel sorry for him and all the decisions that lie ahead with appointments. I pray they will all be "servants" rather than rulers. AMEN
