Word to the Wise
Saturday, June 22, 2013 - Saturday in the 11th Week in Ordinary Time
[2 Cor 12:1-10 and Matt 6:24-34]Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.
JUNE 22, 2013 ST. THOMAS MORE, (martyr)
Earlier in today's gospel scripture, Jesus says, "Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?" If I could, I'd live to be 500 years old! When Jesus says, "Don't worry...." I can only sigh and say, "Tell me how to stop!" Even if I could live in the present without worrying about tomorrow, I'd still worry about the present! It's not a "high anxiety" thing but I know I have a "what's next?" way of doing things. I suspect there are a lot of folks like me in this regard.
The comforting line that helps with the worry is Jesus' statement: "Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all." So, I guess I'm supposed to let God worry about the "what's next?" I'm comforted to know that I'm more important than the birds or the flowers, but I still get up and send these words everyday and worry if the internet will be operating or this computer will do what it's supposed to do!
Living in the present without any worry seems like heaven to me. Maybe that's what Jesus is offering almost here and now! AMEN
