Word to the Wise

Wednesday, October 2, 2013 - Oct. 2 - The Guardian Angels

[Exod 23:20-23 and Matt 18:1-5, 10,]
See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.

OCTOBER 2, 2013  THE HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS

Jesus' words in the Gospel of Matthew are the foundation of the Christian tradition and belief in the existence of "Guardian Angels" - the existence of an incorporeal being assigned to each person to "light, to guard, to rule and guide!" as the old prayer says.  While in the "hierarchy of truths" this one may not rank very high theologically, it is a very popular one and the continual publication of books about encounters testifies to the popularity.
I take Jesus at his word on this even though I am not certain how all of this is arranged.  The imagination is one of the gifts God has given us.  For some, the guardian angel is an invisible being  that wears a long robe and has wings.  Perhaps others see them as a kind of spiritual executive assistant with clipboard and pencil in hand!  I am more inclined to think of a guardian as testimony to the active presence of God in my life - beings of providence, as it were.  I leave the wings and wardrobe to others.  I hold on to God's providential care which God is free to delegate to someone else!  AMEN
