Word to the Wise
Saturday, November 16, 2013 - Saturday in the 32th Week in Ordinary Time
[Wis 18:14-16; 19:6-9 and Luke 18:1-8]Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day ad night? Will he be slow to answer them?
One of the best ways to appreciate the power of the gospel is to put ourselves in the place of the various "characters" who appear in each incident. In today's gospel, we are likely to put ourselves in the position of the widow nagging the judge for justice. Perseverance in prayer is difficult when our expectations don't seem to be met, and Jesus offers us the widow as an example of a persevering person. However, what if we were to put ourselves in the position of the judge? What if the constant door pounding or yelling is coming either from God or from our neighbor? Will we be slow to answer?
By switching the perspective, we go from the "outside looking in" to the "inside looking out." We begin to see things as God sees them. Will we be swift to secure the rights of God's chosen ones who call out to us day and night? The numbers are staggering, but we have to make a start. From the victims of the hurricane in the Philippines to the homeless on our streets, the cries are coming. Remembering Jesus' identification with the poor, the hungry, the imprisoned in Matthew 25, that knock on the door and that persistent voice in the street outside may be his! How long can we dare to resist? AMEN
