Word to the Wise
Sunday, December 1, 2013 - 1st Sunday of Advent - A
[Isa 2:1-5; Rom 13:11-14; Matt 24:37-44]So, too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.
"Preparedness" is a word most of us have heard in this country. It seems to appear in military matters or, on the gulf coast, at the beginning of the "storm season." Electric signs and billboards appear on the freeways here in Houston, TX, where I live, to remind everyone to have necessary supplies on hand in case of a tropical storm. Another form of preparedness could be a burglar alarm! Jesus' images in the gospel today mention a storm and a possible burglary! Both images are aimed at maintaining a state of "preparedness" in Christian life because the Lord will return at a time and place we do not know in advance! Noah had advance warning. The householder knew that he would not get advance warning. In either case, vigilance and action were required.
I realize that no one can live all of one's life in a "fire drill" mode. But that is not necessary if one makes a habit of steady and healthy precautions that guard against unnecessary nasty surprises. Even the Second Coming of the Lord could be an unpleasant surprise to the unprepared! Our baptismal commitment offers us the way of preparedness. The liturgical season of Advent is a reminder of the importance of preparedness. We may be engulfed in all the "holiday season" arrangements and forget that the Christ child who is to come at Christmas is also the Lord who will return at the end of time. It makes sense to be prepared for both "comings." Are we ready? AMEN
