Word to the Wise
Saturday, March 1, 2014 - Saturday in the 7th Week in Ordinary Time
[Jas 5:13-20 and Mark 10:13-16]Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the Church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any, sins, he will be forgiven.
These words from the Letter of James form part of the introductory rite of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick!. Some Catholics will remember that sacrament as being called "extreme unction!" Furthermore the practice prior to the Second Vatican Council was to administer this sacrament only when the recipient was "in danger of death!" The council reformed the sacrament and it is administered anytime a serious or chronic illness or old age is involved. Some parishes with considerable numbers of senior citizens now offer a monthly Mass that includes the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.
When I preach a parish mission, the third or last night of the mission features the anointing of the sick. I can tell you that this never fails to move deeply those who attend! People have reported to me how much this sacrament helped them or someone they brought with them. During the service I invite those who will receive the sacrament to bring someone with them who can lay a hand on their shoulder as a gesture of support. Part of the rite involves my laying my hands on the head of the sick person before anointing them on the forehead and the palms of their hands. Of course there are also those individual situations as well both in and out of hospitals and hospices where I have administered the anointing of the sick.
The frustrating thing is that there is still a lingering belief that this sacrament may alarm the potential recipient and family or friends will not call the priest until the very last moment!! I beg all my Beloved Congregation not to delay the sacrament. If you're in the hospital or sick enough to require medical treatment beyond the ordinary cuts and bruises of everyday life, you are eligible. If you have diabetes or chronic arthritis or a severe emotional condition, go to the parish anointing service or make an appointment with a priest to receive this sacrament! Let the words from the Letter of James be the motivation! AMEN
