Word to the Wise
Tuesday, April 22, 2014 - Octave of Easter - Tues
[Acts 2:36-41 and John 20:11-18]"Mary went and announced to the disciples, 'I have seen the Lord,' and then reported what he had told her." [John]
Mary Magdalen is a special patroness to the Dominican family of friars, nuns, sisters and laity. She is the "proto-preacher!" It is she to whom Jesus entrusted the announcement of his resurrection to the disciples! Women are able to preach in the church at most events except the Eucharist, but that exclusion is very much a sore point, especially given the task conferred on Mary Magdalen! Nevertheless, we Dominicans hope and pray for the day when that exclusion is removed! St Catherine of Siena, a great Dominican laywoman, will have to do what she did well back in the 14th century: challenge and push the powers that be to do the right thing (with the help of Mary Magdalen!).
In the meantime, we can look at Mary Magdalen and the drama that unfolds today in the typical Johannine dialog of misunderstanding leading to enlightenment. In this case it is a bit comical even in the midst of tears. Mary thinks she is talking to the gardener! It is only when the Risen Jesus calls her by name that she recognizes him! And then she grabs hold of him for dear life! Jesus will have none of that clinging. Mary Magdalen (and all women and men of Christian faith) have a task to do! We are entrusted with the message: Christ is risen! At our baptism, we were called by name to this task and we know who has called us! He is risen! Alleluia! AMEN
