Word to the Wise
Saturday, June 7, 2014 - 7th Week of Easter - Sat morning
[Acts 28:16-20, 30-31 and John 21:20-25]There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.
At the end of the exhibit, we meet the artist - or at least one of "them." Suddenly there's an editorial comment! I cannot help but be amused by these last lines of the "add-on" chapter! Scripture scholars have just about filled the world with commentary and reflection on the things that Jesus did that ARE contained in the Bible! The artist says that there are "many other things!"
The final work contains a strange little dialog about "the Beloved Disciple" and Peter, who wonders about the future of the former. "Lord, what about him?" I suspect there was a lot of curiosity about the various prominent disciples in the later community. The text does not mention what happens other than Jesus telling Peter to mind his own business! Our own worries about the eternal destiny of other people might learn a lesson from this! We have to leave that to the Lord and move on.
With this final look at the Gospel of John, we leave the long "exhibit" and get ready for Pentecost Sunday. Monday will open with the "Sermon on the Mount" from the Gospel of Matthew, a catechism of Christianity! Stay tuned! AMEN
