Word to the Wise
Friday, July 25, 2014 - July 25 - St. James, Apostle
[2 Cor 4:7-15 and Matt 20:20-28]We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us......
The image of the earthen vessel is one that I use at penitential services for Parish Missions. I have two clay flower pots, one of which is broken and the other one whole. They are meant to signify the power of reconciliation, but they also remind me of St. Paul's admonition not to think that the good results of the mission are all my doing! We see the "earthen vessel" effect in the gospel for this feast of James the Son of Zebedee. He and his brother, John, get their mother to intercede on their behalf to obtain a "greater" position of honor in the "Kingdom." Jesus has to set them straight, along with the other ten who are indignant at this "end run."
Pope Francis has spoken out loudly about the culture of gossip and careerism in the Vatican, but the problem is endemic in the church [and in any organization where "power" is a highly desired commodity]. Even in a small campus ministry, I have witnessed the desire for power on the part of students. Lord Acton was truly correct when he wrote, "Power corrupts."
No matter what level the "power" exists, I think the words of the hymn Pescador de hombres are the best policy: "Poder es server!" ("Power is for service.") Any "power" that exists in the Christian community comes from the Holy Spirit and is not a "commodity" or possession. If the apostles had to learn that lesson, so do we! AMEN
