Word to the Wise
Thursday, December 4, 2014 - 1st Week of Advent - Thurs
[Isa 26:1-6 and Matt 7:21, 24-27]"Trust in the Lord forever! For the Lord is an eternal rock." [Isaiah" "Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock" [Matthew]
The city of Houston, TX, where I live, is going through a building boom. There are several large apartment complexes going up near our priory. Tall construction cranes dominate the skyline. One such project is directly across the street from my window and I have had the opportunity to watch how the foundation of the building has been constructed. Large amounts of cement are poured into holes in the ground because Houston's soil is not particularly rocky, and is even marshy in some places. So, along with slabs of concrete, there are also pilings being driven deep into the soil. All of these "footings" must support a very large building. Isaiah's words about God as an "eternal rock" and Jesus' words about building one's house on rock through listening and acting on his word have a visual image to reinforce them for me.
Advent is a season of promise and fulfillment, but it is also a season of reassurance. The one who is to come is worthy of our trust. The Lord is an eternal rock. What Jesus tell us is not only worth listening to but must be acted on with complete confidence. If we place confidence in human-made cement to hold up the buildings we live and work in, surely we can place confidence in the Lord and his word! It is in the Lord that we live and move and have our being. AMEN
