Word to the Wise
Sunday, December 7, 2014 - 2nd Sunday of Advent - B
[Isa 40:1-5, 9-11; 2 Pet 3:8-14; Mark 1:1-8,]"A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the Lord! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!" [Isaiah]
It doesn't seem quite right simply to type out these words from Isaiah! I feel as if I should find a way to put Handel's MESSIAH on with its majestic joining of music to the King James Bible English. Then the dramatic figure of John the Baptist, clothed in camel's hair with a dish of wild locusts covered with honey in his hand, can make his entrance in the story of the coming of the Messiah. However, our fascination with such a figure could distract us from recognizing the One whom he heralds. John's own words remind us: "One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals."
The gospels see John as the "voice in the desert" foretold by Isaiah. We may not be able to match John the Baptist in terms of drama, but I think we should give some thought to his mission: to proclaim the coming of the Savior. If the experiences of some people I have encountered are any measure, there is more than enough desert to work in, and it is not a matter of geography! Isaiah and John were seeking to give hope. Wouldn't that be a fantastic gift in this season? It might be just a "glimmer" of hope, but we can do this by our response to some of the trials of the season! There are many who find themselves in a personal and emotional desert at this time of year. Advent gives us the chance to offer a promise that has been fulfilled and continues to fulfill. AMEN
