Word to the Wise
Saturday, June 13, 2015 - Sat. after 2nd Sunday after Pentecost - The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary
[Is 61:9-11 and Luke 2:41-51]I rejoice heartily in the Lord, in my God is the joy of my soul. [Isaiah]
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY [St. Anthony of Padua]
The feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary always follows the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Today she also takes over the feast of St. Anthony of Padua! The scriptures given in the misalet that I use are for Mary's day, so that is what I will use. I'm sure St. Anthony won't mind.
There is an interesting contrast between Isaiah and Luke's gospel today about the lost and found Jesus. The first, from Isaiah, seems to be an inspiration for Luke's composition of the Magnificat and reflects the joy of the expectant mother. The second reflects the anxious heart of a mom who has lost her child in the crowd.
Moms know both feelings, and I think this is at the "heart" of this feast. Jesus' own heart of compassion is "supplmented" (as it were) by a mother's care. To put it more mundanely, his is the heart that helps us get up. Hers is the heart that offers chicken soup. I'll be glad to have both. AMEN
