Word to the Wise
Thursday, June 25, 2015 - Thursday in the 12th Week in Ordinary Time
[Gen 16:1-12, 15-16 or 16:6b-12, 15-16 and Matt 7:21-29]"Hagar, maid of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" [Genesis]
The question posed to Hagar is profound even if it is the result of a family feud! Abraham finds himself being blamed by his wife, Sara, for doing what his wife asked him to do! Like many married men, he ran for cover and told Sara to handle the matter herself! Sara's jealousy makes life miserable for Hagar (who had only been doing what Sara asked her to do in the first place). So Hagar runs away and she encounters God's messenger on the road. The messenger asks her the big question: "Where have you come from and where are you going?"
It can be hard to keep the big picture in mind when one is fighting battles inside the frame. The messenger sends Hagar home so she and her child can play a part in God's larger plan. Her son, Ishmael, is regarded by Moslems as one of their ancestors! It meant more misery for Hagar, but at least she knew that God would find a way to make life easier. The eventual birth of Isaac to Sara probably took care of it. I am grateful for Hagar's question, especially when a particular project or hope doesn't seem to be going the way I'd like. The question gives perspective: Where have you come from, and where are you going?" AMEN
