AUGUST 22 THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
The twenty-third chapter of Matthew is composed of a lengthy series of critical comments from Jesus directed at the religious authorities of the Jewish community at the time: scribes, Pharisees, Saduccees and elders. Many of the comments begin with the words, "Woe to you...." These figures are painted in very difficult colors! Yet we know that there were some of them who became believers in Jesus, while still maintaining their meticulous observance of Jewish customs. This would create problems later on for Gentile converts and result in the "Council of Jerusalem" with the face-off between Paul and Peter. Two figures stand out among these: Nicholas and Joseph of Arimathea, who come to take Jesus' body down from the cross.
Jesus' criticism is that these authorities manipulated the Mosaic Law to their own benefit and had become enamored of power and prestige. Jesus was clearly a threat to them and they began early in his ministry to plot against him. Ultimately, they "succeed" by getting the Romans to execute him as a kind of revolutionary. At the same time, Jesus, in today's passage, recognizes the teaching authority of the scribes and Pharisees but condemns their practice.
From the lowest parish position to the highest curial position in Rome, prestige and authority and "turf" can become obstcles to the preaching of the gospel. Pope Francis took dead aim at the curia just before Christmas! Pastors who have had to referee battles between parish groups know the same problem. We will see more of this chapter beginning Tuesday, but for now, we can reflect on the role of prestige and power and honor in our own lives and communities and ask if Jesus' criticism hits home. He praises the lowly servant. Who do we know like that? AMEN
