Word to the Wise
Tuesday, September 1, 2015 - Tuesday in the 22th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Thess 5:1-6, 9-11 and Luke 4:31-37]TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2015, TUESDAY IN THE TWENTY-SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME "What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." [Luke] After being run out of his hometown, Jesus decides to settle in a town by the Sea of Galilee called Capernaum. That becomes his base of operations, so to speak. What people find amazing about him is that he does not refer to any other authority for what he says. Most other teachers of the time would cite well-known and respected authorities for what they said, much as we would. Jesus needed no other authority, and he backed up his authority by the healing and exorcisms. We cannot speak on our own authority about Jesus. We speak with his authority by virtue of our baptism. What we CAN do is speak with confidence and live out Jesus' teachings so that our very lives bear witness to the words that we speak. That means that Jesus' authority will speak through us. AMEN
