Word to the Wise
Monday, November 13, 2017 - Monday in the 32th Week in Ordinary Time
[Wis 1:1-7 and Luke 17:1-6]Love justice, you who judge the earth; think of the Lord in goodness, and seek him in integrity of heart; because he is found by those who test him not, and he manifests himself to those who do not disbelieve him." [Wisdom]
NOVEMBER 13 ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CABRINI
The Book of Wisdom provides the first scripture of the day for the next few days. It is one of the more recently composed books of the Old Testament, but it represents a form of literature that is quite ancient. Archaeologists have found similar works in the artifacts of some of the oldest civilizations, like Egypt. That should alert of to what is tried and true in human experience. As people of faith, however, we should pay attention to the last words in today's passage: For the Spirit of the Lord fills the world, is all-embracing, and knows what man says.
The opening words for today's passage speaks to those who are in leadership and challenges them to make God's wisdom the guide of their life. I do not doubt that many leaders try to do their best in that regard. The ones who don't are frightening because power can be addictive, which means someone who is addicted to it will do whatever they think is necessary to hold on to it. Integrity of heart disappears and is replaced by authoritarianism. If we believe "the Spirit of the Lord fills the whole world, is all-embracing, and knows what man says," our leadership and our own conduct will be held accountable to God's Spirit. AMEN
