Word to the Wise
Friday, June 15, 2018 - Friday in the 10th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-16 and Matt 5:27-32]A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the Lord - but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake - but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire - but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, "Elijah, why are you here?" [1 Kings]
Every day it seems we get samples of what wind (tornados, hurricanes), earthquakes (the West Coast provides these in abundance), fire (huge wildfires going on as I write this) can do. The awesome force of nature can leave us wondering how we humans have managed to survive at all! It explains why humans have sometimes made these forces objects of worship and named "gods" for them. Elijah, however, was not impressed by these forces. He recognized the tiny voice that asked him the fundamental question: "Elijah, why are you here?" In reply to Elijah's complaint that everything he has done has been to no avail and his life was in danger, God simply replies, in effect, "Get on with your job and leave the rest to me!"
I have never been in danger of my life from adversaries, but I do recognize the experience of that tiny voice that asks me, "Why are you here?" and to my complaints and worries gives me the response, "Get on with what I have called you to do and leave the rest to me." I also sense that experience in those who have survived some of the natural disasters that seem to occur almost daily. They "pick up their lives and move on." I sense it in friends who have experienced breakdowns in their personal lives or the lives of their children. It is the power of faith in God that if we "get on with it," God will take care of the rest. This is not to say any of it will necessarily be easy, but at least it will be possible, and there is where hope lives. AMEN
