Word to the Wise

[2 Cor 4:7-15 and Matt 5:27-32]We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be pf God and not from us. [2 Corinthians]
Every good cook has one of two pots or pans or knives that have been favorites for many years and show the signs of continued use until the day comes when their principal purpose is defeated by continuing to use them. Paul's image of the earthen vessel comes home to me more and more as I age. At the present moment I am preaching a retreat for some sisters, most of whom are elderly. The great majority of them were school teachers before they "retired". The earthen vessels of their bodies show a great deal of wear, but they still contain the power of God, bearing witness to the gospel.
Paul's image is also a warning to anyone who might be tempted to exalt their status as a particular instrument. Pope Francis has been continually warning the priests of the church about "clericalism." But the problem can infect anyone called to a particular ministry in the church. The idea is to be of service as long as the gospel is preached by our efforts. It is the power of God that matters, and not the title of office. AMEN
