Word to the Wise
Tuesday, August 6, 2019 - Aug. 6 - The Transfiguration of the Lord
[Dan 7:9-10, 13-14; 2 Pet 1:16-19; C: Luke 9:28b-36]"This is my chosen Son; listen to him." [Luke]
The event of the transfiguration is reported in all three of the "synoptic" gospels. This gives it a certain importance in the various traditions that the three evangelists - Mark, Matthew and Luke - chose to follow in composing their portraits of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. Since it is clear from the accounts that the witnesses - Peter, James and John - were confused and frightened by the event, and did not talk about it for a long time, we too may find the report unusual and mysterious.even if we aren't frightened by it.
Certain threads are worth noting. The event occurs on a mountain. Throughout the Bible, big things happen on a mountain. (I have visited the place that is traditionally considered the site - a magnificent view preceded and followed by a terrifying taxi drive!) A second thread is the context. Jesus has just predicted, for the first time, his suffering and death - another bewildering thing to his disciples. How can such a thing happen? A third thread shows up in the words that come from the cloud: "This is my chosen Son, listen to him." Similar words to these were heard at Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist. A fourth thread is the appearance of Moses and Elijah who represent the law and the prophets, of which Jesus would be considered the ultimate fulfillment. It is a lot to digest.
An event like the transfiguration would be termed in theological jargon as a "theophany" - a special manifestation of God's presence, like the story of Moses and the Burning Bush. The three disciples who went up that mountain learned one thing: Jesus was (and is) more than just a wandering rabbi with some devoted disciples and beautiful teachings. That is a lesson we can all take from the Transfiguration of the Lord! AMEN
