Word to the Wise
Wednesday, December 25, 2019 - Christmas: Mass during the Day - ABC
[Isa 52:7-10; Heb 1:1-6; John 1:1-18]And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw hi glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth. [John]
There are three sets of scriptures assigned for the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord! One for "Mass during the night," one for "Mass at Midnight," and one for "Mass during the Day!" There is a kind of progression in the three celebrations. The first gospel scripture, for Mass during the Night (probably our Vigil Mass), speaks of the birth of Jesus. The second gospel, (for Midnight Mass), focuses on the response of the shepherds in going to see what has happened. The first two come from the Gospel According to Luke. The third gospel, for Mass During the Day, comes from the Gospel According to John, and reflects a longer period of understanding the full meaning of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. The baby in the manger becomes the Word made flesh who has existed from all eternity. That is quite a jump from the humble stable!
Yet, this variety offers us so many ways to reflect on the Incarnation. The human element of birth that God has taken on is wonder enough, but contemplation of the event expands the wonder as we see "the glory of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth." The past, the present, and the future come together today when heaven meets earth and we are all lifted up into that mystery, which the Magi will soon come seeking.
To all my Beloved Congregation, I wish a blessed Christmas celebration. You will all be remembered as I celebrate the Eucharist on Christmas morning (during the day!!!!). AMEN
