Word to the Wise
Friday, March 13, 2020 - 2nd Week of Lent - Fri
[Gen 37:3-4, 12-13a, 17b-28a and Matt 21:33-43, 45-46]The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes? [Matthew]
The stories of Joseph and Jesus are filled with the irony of triumph by someone rejected by others who then turns the tables on the rejecters! Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers only to become powerful in Egypt and his brothers have to come to him for food! Jesus is rejected and put to death by the chief priests and elders only to rise triumphant. The chief priests and elders will eventually lose everything when the Romans destroy the temple and Jerusalem less than 40 years after Jesus' death and resurrection.
Joseph's brothers are blinded by envy of the affection shown him by his father. The chief priests and elders are blinded by jealousy for their power and by fear and envy of Jesus' power and popularity.
There is a Lenten challenge here. Is there anyone who has something that we want in a negative way? (envy). Is there something we have that we hoard and refuse to share and reject anyone who seems to threaten it? (jealousy) Coming to terms with these negative traits in Lent could be a true challenge that can yield great spiritual benefits and peace! AMEN
