Word to the Wise
Tuesday, June 30, 2020 - Tuesday in the 13th Week in Ordinary Time
[Amos 3:1-8; 4:11-12 and Matt 8:23-27]So now I will deal with you in my own way, O Israel! And since I will deal thus with you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel!. [Amos]
Imagine, if you will, business as usual at the major shrine of your country, with people coming and going in the routine of sacrifices and civic duties. The country's leader is popular and some folks are doing quite well economically. Suddenly, a country shepherd shows up and starts yelling at everyone that their lives and their whole country are corrupt and their prosperity is a sham, built on the backs of the poor! Hmmmm.....it wouldn't be too hard to imagine since we have had figures like that in our own American history! In the case of the first scripture for today, it is the prophet Amos who is that country shepherd. He dates from the period 786-746 B.C. in what was the "northern kingdom" - Samaria, which had come into being after the division of Solomon's kingdom.
Amos is colorful and fiery. We might be tempted to pass over him as one of those Old Testament figures that have no relevance for us "enlightened" Christians. However, we should remember that the prophecy of Amos is part of the Word of God and is inspired scripture and meant for more than Samaria! He might be a good "wake up" call in this week leading up to the 4th of July celebration of our nation's independence! A collective "examination of conscience" might be just what we need! Amos would agree! AMEN
