Word to the Wise

[Acts 18:23-28 and John 16:23b-28]For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." [John]
One way to sum up the Gospel According to John would be to say, "Jesus is the one whom God has sent." But that would leave too many questions unanswered, which was a problem for many years before the Christian community settled on the trinitarian understanding that we have now. God did not simply choose one person born in Nazareth in the first century in the same way as the Old Testament prophets were chosen and called. The relationship is completely different. Jesus speaks of a Father/Son relationship. It is out of this relationship that Jesus' mission comes. He now tells the disciples that his mission is about to end and he will be "returning" to the Father. He will leave behind the fruit of his relationship with the Father, namely the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us to all truth.
We will learn more of Jesus' relationship to the Father in the days to come in the last portion of the Last Supper discourse, which is called the "High Priestly Prayer." Suffice it to say for now that Jesus shares with us the very love that he receives from his Father and challenges us to share it with one another. AMEN
