Word to the Wise
Tuesday, January 21, 2025 - Tuesday in the 2nd Week in Ordinary Time
[Heb 6:10-20 and Mark 2:23-28]God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones. We earnestly desire each of you to demonstrate the same eagerness for the fulfillment of hope until the end, so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who, through faith and patience, are inheriting the promises. [Hebrews]

"DOES ANYBODY CARE?!!!!" Whether one is in one of the traditional "helping professions" or an assembly line worker, the question inevitably arises, especially when one is nearing "burn out," DOES ANYBODY CARE WHAT I DO? This can be a particularly difficult question in matters relating to the day to day challenges of serving on a parochial level or for a particular cause that is related to faith. The Letter to the Hebrews seems to recognize that it is very easy to reach the point of asking, "What's the use? Does God even care what I'm doing?" The answer today is that God is not unjust and God does care.
But God's "care" needs to find an outlet in human care. People who are "human resource managers" know well what can happen when a person in a particularly sensitive position begins to experience "burnout" from overwork, unfair criticism, etc. But this can occur even in a family when a parent reaches a breaking point because of the demands of child care, finances, personal health or that of the spouse. In short, God's care needs skin. We see it on a crucifix, yes! But on a daily basis, we need to see it in one another as well. Some well-timed words of praise/support, maybe, when appropriate, accompanied by a hug, can go a long way. God does care, but we can put skin on it. AMEN
