Word to the Wise

[Acts 6:8-15 and John 6:22-29]"Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the leaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal." So they said to him. "What can we do to accomplish the works of God?" Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." [John]

Once in a while I'll hear the question, "Do you believe in miracles?" "Miracles" and "signs" do attract attention and devotion, but there is a more important question, which Jesus poses again and again in the Gospel According to John. "Do you believe in the One whom God has sent?" The crowds in today's account from that gospel came running after Jesus because he had multiplied the loaves and fishes. Their hunger was fixed on getting more bread from the wonderworker. Faith in Jesus as the One whom God has sent wasn't their focus! Jesus challenges them to a greater "work:" FAITH!
In the Gospel According to John, this is not a matter of the classic faith/works controversy. Here faith IS a WORK and a testimony that brings others to belief. And in his post-resurrection appearance to the disciples, Jesus says, "As the Father has sent me, so I send you!" In the Last Supper discourse we are challenged to "bear fruit that will last!" [John 15:16]. The popular expression, "faith that works miracles," is true, but faith itself is the miracle that works miracles! AMEN
