Word to the Wise
Thursday, May 15, 2025 - 4th Week of Easter - Thurs
[Acts 13:13-25 and John 13:16-20]"From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me." [John]
Much of the gospel scripture for these days after Easter is being taken from the Last Supper account in the Gospel According to John. Today's passage is taken from the scene at the beginning of that account when Jesus washes the feet of the disciples. Two statements, today, stand out. The first is one that connects Jesus' identity with the voice in the Burning Bush in Exodus 3 when God tells Moses to tell the Israelites that I AM sent you. The I AM statements appear throughout the gospel.
The second statement places the disciples in the position of Moses. They are being sent to preach the Good News and to personify it. Whoever "'receives" them will not only receive the Son but also the Father! The implications of this for all of us are profound. The love of God, revealed in the Son, and sustained in us by the Holy Spirit, is brought to the world through our lives. Our words of "preaching" are made manifest in our actions toward others. It is I AM who sends us. AMEN
