Word to the Wise

Tuesday, June 3, 2025 - 7th Week of Easter - Tues

[Acts 20:17-27 and John 17:1-11a]
Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him. Now, this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began." [John]

The Last Supper discourse moves into its final chapter with a distinct shift from Jesus addressing the disciples to him addressing his Father in what is traditionally called the "High Priestly prayer."  The opening paragraph includes a number of "themes" that appear again and again up to this point in the Gospel According to John.  The entire prayer is an interweaving of these themes in a stream of consciousness style, as if Jesus were in a trance of some kind.
"The hour has come..." Jesus is about to accomplish the crowning act of his mission. [cf. marriage feast at Cana 2:4] He will be "lifted up" [cf the dialog with NIcodemus.3:14]   He will be glorified in his death and resurrection [cf. the Prologue to the gospel  1:14].  He offers eternal life through faith in him as "the one whom you sent." [cf. cf. dialog after the multiplication of loaves and fishes. 6:28]  These are just examples of the interweaving that brings into a prayerful synthesis the meaning and purpose offered by the Gospel According to John.  The gospel scripture for the next three days will come from this prayer which offers so much for our understanding of the entire Gospel According to John.  Stay tuned!  AMEN
