Word to the Wise

Saturday, June 7, 2025 - 7th Week of Easter - Sat morning

[Acts 28:16-20, 30-31 and John 21:20-25]
He remained for two full years in his lodgings. He received all who came to him and with complete assurance and without hindrance he proclaimed the Kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus. [Acts] It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. There are many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written. [John]

The two scriptures for today's liturgy contain the last words of the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel According to John.  The Easter season will end with the celebration tomorrow of the feast of Pentecost.  St. Paul's journeys end with his being under a kind of house arrest in Rome where he would be eventually martyred.  The Gospel According to John actually has two "endings," but today's is the final one!    The great "what next" is ahead of us - the telling of the story of Jesus' ministry, and by extension, the story of preaching the gospel that is still being written in the lives of faithful Christians.  Yes, the scriptures are given to us as writings inspired by the Holy Spirit whose coming we will celebrate tomorrow, but we too receive  that same Holy Spirit through Baptism/Confirmation and are called,  like  those in that Upper Room on that day, to bear witness like St. Paul and the Beloved Disciple.  Indeed, the letters of Paul and John and Peter and James and Jude and Hebrews and Revelation all bear witness to the missionary effort to which we too are called.
Each of us is a page in that story of faith.  AMEN
