Word to the Wise
Friday, December 5, 2025 - 1st Week of Advent - Fri
[Isa 29:17-24 and Matt 9:27-31]On that day the dear shall hear the words of a book; and out of gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see. [Isaiah] As Jesus passed by, two blind men followed him, crying out, "Son of David, have pity on us!" When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I can do this?" Yes, Lord," they said to him. Then he touched their eyes and said, "Let it be done for you according to your faith." And their eyes were opened. [Matthew]
I once saw two separate episodes on local TV news in which a grown man and a boy, both of whom were born color-blind, received special glasses that enable them to see color. Both adult and child reacted by bursting into tears! A whole new world opened to them. The experience was almost overwhelming! One might recall the story of Helen Keller, born deaf and blind, who was introduced to the world of communication when she associated a touch sign with water flowing! Isaiah's vision and Jesus' healing of the two blind men speak to us today of hope beyond hope!
In this season of Advent hope, we have the breakthrough of the birth of Jesus Christ into human history! He encountered blindness and deafness on more than one level. He healed the physical form but the moral form proved resistant and continues to do so. The moral kind requires us to continue Jesus' mission to heal the deafness and blindness of those who, even calling themselves "Christians," disregard human dignity and life from womb to tomb! The birth of Jesus that we anticipate was and is God's message to us that we "put skin on" in this season and offer hope to all humanity in our daily living out of the way we have been given by the one whose birth we will celebrate! AMEN
