Word to the Wise
Saturday, February 7, 2026 - Saturday in the 4th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Kgs 3:4-13 and Mark 6:30-34]"Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?" The Lord was pleased that Solomon made this request. [1 Kings]
Solomon's request for an "understanding heart" was clearly pleasing to God who promised him in return "a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after your there will come no one to equal you!" The text reflects the reputation of Solomon in Jewish history up to the time of composition! The Book of Wisdom, composed not long before the birth of Christ, is attributed to him!
Sometimes a pastor (or other leader) is given the role without any previous experience in it. I certainly experienced that in more than one appointment I have received. The "understanding heart" has to be the first prayer! Wisdom will come with experience. Associated with, and necessary for, an "understanding heart," is the virtue of PRUDENCE. This virtue is aimed at the way forward in the midst of many paths that may be offered.
King Solomon, like King David, was not a perfect person and his leadership was not always the best and wisest. But it was sufficient to gain him the reputation of being a wise leader. So be it with all "leaders." There are many "styles" of leadership, but the model we have in faith is Jesus himself. In him we see the "understanding heart" and the wisdom to guide us on our journey. Pastors and other leaders in a Christian community can look to him and also pray for that "understanding heart" and wisdom they need to lead. AMEN
