Word to the Wise

[3 John 5-8 and Luke 18:1-8]Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.......
When I was a law student, there was an expression that occasionally made an appearance on posters or as a comment that went like this: "The wheels of Justice may grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine." Of course, that's not always the case, but the image of eventual justice is one that is similar to what Jesus says in the parable today. He is preaching to a community that is wondering if God really IS on their side since they're under persecution. He is telling them to stay the course, to persevere in prayer and not to get discouraged by what they perceive to be lack of results. I've known some wonderful persons who have worked in the field of social justice for decades, indeed for a lifetime. When asked if they ever get discouraged by lack of dramatic results in justice for the poor or oppressed, they simply speak to their faith in God and the necessity to keep at the task continually. They warn against angry folks who burn out after two or three years of hard and less than dramatic work. They remind me of those "wheels of justice that grind exceedingly fine." They are contented with the little victories and personal results for individual situations. In the matter of prayer and justice, a sense of the limitations of human endeavors and the realization that we have to leave certain things to God can be important. A determination to persevere is absolutely necessary. AMEN
